Bihar court orders FIR against Amitabh Bachchan, Madhuri Dixit for endorsing Maggi

Muzaffarpur: A district court in Bihar has directed the police to register an FIR against two Nestle officials and film stars Amitabh Bachchan, Madhuri Dixit and Priyanka Chopra, who have featured in the Maggi advertisements and arrest them if required.

Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Ramchandra Prasad directed Kazi Mohammadpur Police Station to register the FIR against the five and investigate the complaint. The order came during the hearing of a case filed by lawyer Sudhir Kumar Ojha on Monday.

The petition had named Managing Director of Nestle Mohan Gupta, its Joint Director Sabab Alam and the three film stars Amitabh, Madhuri and Priyanka, who have featured in Maggi ads at different times.

The complainant claimed that he purchased Maggi from a shop at Lenin chowk of Muzaffarpur on May 30 and that he was taken ill after he ate it. This prompted him to file a case against Nestle, the maker of the noodles and the film stars who are the product's brand ambassadors. Bollywood has been up in arms over the actors being held accountable for endorsing a product like Maggi which has come under the scanner.

Meanwhile, in some relief for Maggi, initial tests in Maharashtra and Karnataka states show that the samples did not have unhealthy levels of lead. However, the tests conducted by Karnataka and Maharashtra Food and Drug Administrations are being redone now even as test results from other states are still awaited.

Nestle has also claimed that independent tests done by it have come out clean. A row has been generated after the Uttar Pradesh Food Safety and Drug Administration had found excessive monosodium gluta-mate and lead in Maggi samples.
