First Indian Film Reached That Mark In '88
Indian cinema didn't even have reasonable market value until late 90's. Our cinema range started to extend in overseas from thereafter and today few Bollywood projects are easily crossing 50 Cr mark alone in overseas.

Guess what, a Bollywood film that released in 1988 had grossed over $2million in USA and Canada. In fact, the film 'Salaam Bombay!' we are discussing about was the first Indian movie to reach the $2M milestone.

The film which deals with the day-to-day life of children living on the streets of Bombay (Mumbai) was directed and co-produced by Mira Nair. Shafiq Syed, Hansa Vithal, Chanda Sharma, Raghuvir Yadav, Anita Kanwar and Nana Patekar were lead cast in the movie.

The list is big for achievements of the movie. It won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi, the National Board of Review Award for Top Foreign Film, the Golden Camera and Audience Awards at the Cannes Film Festival, and three awards at the Montr©al World Film Festival.

'Salaam Bombay!' was India's second film submission to be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. The film was among the list of "The Best 1,000 Movies Ever Made" by the New York Time
