Happy Birthday Aamir Khan: Why he is Bollywood's reigning superstar

Happy Birthday Aamir Khan: Why he is Bollywood's reigning superstar
We grew up on a diet of the Khan films- Salman, Shah Rukh and Aamir. Salman was the perfect lover boy first, before he settled into the Bhai complacency- which has now become his synonym. SRK impressed everyone with his anti-hero image for a while, before he earned the title of the king of romance.

These three stars have been ruling Bollywood for years now, consistently, despite innumerable duds along the way. Salman can play a beefy hero in action-packed films like Tiger Zinda Hai, which has plotholes, the size of craters, but still get away with it. You know a Salman Khan action film is sure to rake in more than Rs 300 crore. Bhai fans go for the film, just to watch Salman, and not even bother about the story.

SRK hasn't been able to break away completely from his romantic image, and is having his fair share of struggles at the moment, as his Jab Harry Met Sejal left many of his fans disillusioned.

Yet, Aamir worked overtime to ensure that he never fell into a checked box. Unintentionally or deliberately, Aamir has always stood apart.

He got noticed with his loverboy role in Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak (1988). Dil released in 1990, and Aamir had consolidated his position as the potential superstar of Bollywood. Since then, he has delivered hits, successes- and blockbusters every year.

We laughed at his crazy antics in Hum Hain Rahi Pyaar Ke. He played the perfect street friend in Rangeela. Let's not forget the determined police inspector in Sarfarosh. And then came Lagaan, which gave international exposure to Bollywood. He then did Dil Chahta Hai, and we couldn't help but be charmed by his carefree attitude.

He continuously reinvented himself over the years, and even earned the tag of being a "method actor", owing to the lengths he would go to, for his films. He could beef up in Ghajini, or play a college boy in 3 idiots.

In a world, where it is easy to get stereotyped, Aamir made sure that he wasn't a formulaic actor.

You never know what to expect in an Aamir Khan film.

While Salman Khan's fans and SRK's continue to wage wars against each other, they unite when it comes to Aamir's films.

In the case of Aamir's films, the audience enjoys and engages with the film as well, and even spawns several debates, as in the case of Dangal. Each of his films are so starkly different from each other. And, he makes it a point to impress his fans over and over again, with each film.

Aamir grew with the times. While several of his contemporaries weren't ready to commit to other roles apart from that from a romantic hero, he took risks, and experimented with his characters.

He even played a supporting role in the film Secret Superstar- something many bigwigs would refuse to do. Instead of looking at supporting roles as a confinement and limited, he has expanded on his skill and prowess, without taking away the limelight from Zaira.

This isn't the first time Aamir essayed such a role. In Taare Zameen Par, he played the role of an art teacher who encourages a boy, struggling with dyslexia, to pursue his love for art. The film struck the right chords, and walked away with several accolades. Not just this, Aamir still managed to create an impact, even while in the back seat. In Dangal, he let the girls take centre-stage.

As this unconventional superstar turns 53 today, we can only expect him to scale further heights of superstardom.
