India successfully test fires BrahMos cruise missile

India on Monday successfully conducted the first test of the BrahMoscruise missile under life extension programme. First time such a mission has been undertaken by India resulting in extension of service life of the missile from 10 to 15 years and huge cost savings for the armed forces.

This successful flight test carried out by BrahMos and Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) at 10:40 am on 21 May 2018 from ITR, Balasore to validate BrahMos missile life extension technologies developed for the first time in India.

BrahMos missile has flight range of up to 290-km with supersonic speed all through the flight, leading to shorter flight time, consequently ensuring lower dispersion of targets, quicker engagement time and non-interception by any known weapon system in the world.

Missile destructive power is enhanced due to large kinetic energy on impact. Its cruising altitude could be up to 15 km and terminal altitude is as low as 10 meters. It carries a conventional warhead weighing 200 to 300 kgs.

The Indian Army has already inducted three regiments of BrahMos in its arsenal. All are are equipped with Block-III version of the missile.

The land-attack version of BrahMos has been operationalised in the Indian Army since 2007.

The fire-and-forget missile has the capability to take on surface targets by flying a combined hi-lo trajectory, thus evading enemy air defence systems.

Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman congratulated Team Brahmos and DRDO for the successful test carried out from ITR in Balasore to validate the Brahmos missile life extension technologies developed for the first time in India.

BrahMos is the first Indian missile whose life has been extended from 10 to 15 years.

"The successful test will result in huge savings of replacement cost of missiles held in the inventory of the Indian armed forces," tweeted the Defence Minister.
