Family members of Indian nursing student, who was studying at University of Pennsylvania and committed suicide, sued e-shopping giant Amazon. The family alleged that the 20-year-old woman got cyanide from Thailand through the shopping portal.
The student, who committed suicide two years ago, faced sexual harassment. According to the lawsuit, she complained about the harassment, but no action was taken as that made her end her life.
The lawsuit claims that her grades plunged and she was even arrested for alcohol intoxication, despite all her problems the conduct towards her was always hostile, unsympathetic and vindictive at times.
In December 2012, the woman placed order for Cyanide crystals though Amazon and the vendor was from Thailand. The Cyanide was listen as kitchen item in the list of products sold by the vendor, claims the suit which was filed late in July. According to certain media reports, the complaint alleged that Amazon processed the payment and kept a chunk of the sale price.
In spring 2013 semester, she was being investigated for academic misconduct. She was abstained from attending classes and was ordered to leave her dorm till hearing for the misconduct.
On February 8 2013, the day of hearing, she was found unresponsive in her dorm room and was declared dead within few hours.
Amazon offered Cyanide for e-sale till February 2, 2013, just days before her death. Earlier, the poison was purchased for over 50 times and 11 deaths were reported, according to the lawsuit.
According to certain media reports, Amazon did not give out any comments and the university did not comment of the pending litigations.
