Nido Taniam's death: Rahul visits protesters at Jantar Mantar

New Delhi: Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi on Monday reached Jantar Mantar to address the candle light protest carried out by the North Eastern community against the death of Arunachal Pradesh student Nido Taniam.

Taniam was allegedly killed after a brawl with some shopkeepers at Lajpat Nagar.

The incident took place last week when the teen had approached shopkeepers asking them for directions. However, they got into an altercation after the shopkeepers allegedly made fun of his hairstyle and passed racist comments.

Taniam, son of Congress MLA Nido Pavitra, was allegedly beaten by the shopkeepers.

While addressing the protesters, the Gandhi scion said that there is only one India wherein all deserve equal respect. He further said that Nido deserves justice as he is an Indian irrespective of where he belongs to.

On the other hand, Delhi High Court today asked the Centre, Delhi government and the Delhi Police to file report on the incident. A bench of Chief Justice N V Ramana and Rajiv Sahai Endlaw demanded the report with details about the steps taken for safety of the people who hail from the North East and stay in Delhi.

Earlier, Gandhi had met several street vendors. The street vendors had requested him to get the Street Vendors Bill passed in Rajya Sabha.

The Street Vendors Bill has several provisions to protect livelihood, social security and human rights of more than ten million urban street vendors across cities and towns of India, has gone through years of struggle.
