No increase in assembly seats for now?

Notwithstanding the tall claims being made by Telugu Desam Party president, Andhra Pradesh chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu and his Telangana counterpart K Chandrasekhar Rao about the increase in the number of assembly seats in the Telugu states, the NDA government at the Centre seems to have could-shouldered the proposal.

Though Naidu said the bill proposed for delimitation of the assembly constituencies in AP and Telangana will be surely introduced in the parliament this monsoon session which commenced on Monday, the agenda for the session does not have any mention of the bill.

“The assembly constituency delimitation bill will not come up for discussion this session. There are over 34 bills to be passed by the parliament in this two-week session. And there is no possibility of introducing a fresh bill now, as the time is not sufficient,” CPI (M) leader Sitaram Yechury said, after an all-party meeting held in Delhi on Sunday.

Apparently, the NDA government is hesitating to take it up because the Congress party is strongly opposing the same and Rahul Gandhi said the party won’t allow it to be passed in Rajya Sabha. Though NDA can make some extra efforts to get it passed, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is not so keen on making such efforts.

Under any circumstances, the delimitation bill has to get the parliament approval this year, since it would take more than a year to complete the delimitation process. So, the TDP and the TRS are running short of time, but the NDA is not in a hurry!
