The accused has been identified as Shobha, a diploma holder and a native of Chintamani. She had stayed at different PGs to steal laptops and led a lavish life with her boyfriend. Police said Shobha even left her job at a private firm after she started making quick bucks through thefts. The police have recovered 10 laptops from the accused.
According to police, Shobha had come to the city and took up a job in a private firm where she worked for a few months. She lived at a PG near her office, where she first stole a laptop from a room next to hers and sold it for a good price.
With the initial success, Shobha began changing PGs and lived there as a tenant, under various aliases, without furnishing any identity proof. She would pay a partial amount of the deposit and request the PG owner provide her a few days time to furnish ID proof.
When the owner allots a room to her, she would steal the laptops and other belongings of other inmates and escape. Police said in just one month she had stolen over 10 laptops, worth Rs 4 lakh.
Based on a tip-off, she was arrested from a laptop service centre, where she had gone to sell her recent catch. The police are searching for her boyfriend for further investigation.
