Hyderabad: After successfully hosting the Global Entrepreneurship Summit (GES), Hyderabad is set to be host for another major global IT event called the World Congress IT (WCIT). The yearly-event which is being held for the first time in India will bring together thought-leaders, thinkers, government leaders and social leaders to share their perception on the change surrounding the sector and in turn help us understand, prepare and adapt for the changes.

“The hosting of World Congress IT presents a unique opportunity for India and delighted that Hyderabad has been chosen as the host city. This comes close on the heels of the very successful GES and will put Hyderabad on the world map once again,” said IT Minister K T Rama Rao.

The event being held from February 19 to 21 is expected to have 2,500 delegates from 30 countries. The three-day event will major areas of technology that are reshaping the world today that include artificial intelligence, blockchain and will have 22 sessions on different topics. Apart from this, on the sidelines the event will also host 24 sessions on policy dialogues, analyst corners, CIO sessions and boardroom CEO sessions. It is being hosted in partnership with Nasscom, World Information Technology and Services Alliance (WITSA) and government of Telangana.

“WCIT will be a comprehensive package that will leave no technology untouched as it is the Olympics of IT. Apart from the sessions, the congress will also create focus mini forums on AI, open innovation, new tech forums and design forums. We have also shortlisted 60 innovative companies from India to display their technology to the visiting delegates. They can also have a touch and feel of the emerging technologies in the IT space,” said R Chandrashekhar, president, Nasscom.

While three bodies are co-hosting the event, Telangana IT principal secretary Jayesh Ranjan informed that the government will be pumping in Rs 8 crore for the event. And this will be given to Nasscom to host and organise the event.  One of the most interesting thing about the event is that while there will be speakers from different spheres of life like Isha Foundation head Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev and Hyderabad-born Adobe CEO Shantanu Narayen, world’s first citizen robot Sophia will also be speaking and attending the event.

Commenting on why and how India got selected to host the event, WITSA secretary general Dr James Poisant said, “We started the WCIT in 1978 and we used to have it as a two-yearly event, but looking at the growing number of applicants and enthusiasm for the event we had to change it to an annual event. Since 2016, we have been hosting it annually and for the 2018 we got five applicants including from India. And depending on various criteria and needs, we zeroed on India to host the event.”

Poisant also added that the more than helpful government and robust political leadership in Telangana also helped them zero on Hyderabad to host the event.
