Peddamma temple EO caught taking bribe from priest

HYDERABAD: The executive officer (EO) of Peddamma Temple in Jubilee Hills was caught red-handed by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on Tuesday while taking Rs 1 lakh — the first instalment of Rs 4 lakh bribe that he had demanded from the temple priest to revoke his suspension. Peddamma temple is the second richest temple in the city with an annual income of over Rs 9 crore.

The ACB laid the trap after priest P Anjaneyulu Sharma filed a complaint. Sharma, a resident of Namalagundu in Hyderabad, told the ACB that EO S Anji Reddy had demanded a bribe of Rs 5 lakh to cancel the suspension order issued in June 2017 by Reddy’s predecessor for alleged misappropriation of temple donation. Reddy finally agreed on Rs 4 lakh. As per the deal, Sharma was to hand over Rs 1 lakh on Tuesday and give the rest on or before May 18 to get orders to join duty, ACB deputy SP BV Satyanarayana said.

Sharma, who did not want to give the bribe, approached ACB. And on Tuesday afternoon, ACB officials caught Reddy as he accepted the first instalment of Rs 1lakh.

The bribe amount was recovered from him and the chemical test on his fingers yielded positive result. Reddy was arrested and would now be produced before the ACB court for judicial remand on Wednesday.

ACB officials appealed to the public to report on their toll-free number 1064 if any employee of endowments department demanded bribe.
