PM Modi pays tribute at Martin Luther King Junior Memorial
Washington: Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived here at Martin Luther King Junior Memorial to pay homage during the second day of his stay in the American capital.
Prime Minister Modi was accompanied by U.S. President Barack Obama.
The Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial is located in West Potomac Park in Washington, D.C., southwest of the National Mall (but within the larger area commonly referred to as the "National Mall").
The national memorial is America`s 395th unit in the national park service. The monumental memorial is located at the northwest corner of the Tidal Basin near the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial, on a sightline linking the Lincoln Memorial to the northwest and the Jefferson Memorial to the southeast. The official address of the monument, 1964 Independence Avenue, S.W., commemorates the year the Civil Rights Act of 1964 became law.
Although this is not the first memorial to an African-American in Washington, D.C., Dr. King is the first African-American honored with a memorial on or near the National Mall and only the fourth non-President to be memorialized in such a way. The King Memorial is administered by the National Park Service (NPS).
Earlier he started the day by paying his tribute at the Mahatma Gandhi statue located outside the Indian embassy here following which he met US Defense Secretary, Chuck Hagel.
Later on, Prime Minister Modi met President Obama where the two leaders and their respective delegations carried out a review of bilateral ties in various spheres and sectors of mutual interest to the two countries.
