Now that biopics have found their space in bollywood, here comes another one speaking of the legend who attempted to make a plane before the Wright Brothers did. Vibhi Puri’s Hawaizaada starring Ayushmann Khurrana, Mithun Chakraborty and Pallavi Sharda hits the theatres today. Lets see how this one turns out to be…
Story:
Hawaizaada is set in the pre-independence era of 1895 and is a story of Shivkar Talpade (Ayushmann), who is loser by means of education. Kicked out of the house by his parents, Shivi happens to meet Shastri (Mithun Chakraborty), who is a genius and an expert in vedic sciences.
Together, the two go ahead in fulfilling the dream of inventing an aircraft despite facing opposition from the Britishers. Will their dreams come true? Will they be able to go against British government? Forms the rest of the story…
Performances:
Ayushmann Khurrana ventures the unknown territory with this film as he is no more the North Indian guy and he does a decent job. There are scenes where he overdoes and goes a tad bit too dramatic especially in an entire sequence where he tries to pull off a Charlie Chaplin feat. Overall he puts up an average show and this film is certainly not his big ticket.
Pallavi Sharda is the female lead and while she may win points for her pretty face, she still clearly has a lot to learn on the acting front. Sadly, in her Marathi item number too she is disappointing with awkward dance moves which are neither hot or sexy.
Mithoon Chakraborty who plays the mentor Shastri, fits into his role quite perfectly. As the tired-old-man with a mission on his mind, his funny yet caring and positive character is the only one which is actually worth a watch.
Plus Points:
Ayushmann Khurrana is decent in his act. Mithun Chakraborty plays the role of a scientist with perfection. The concept taken up by the director is unique and quite interesting to talk about. Some aircraft building scenes have been showcased well.
Minus Points:
If nothing, the movies set in the 80’s era are usually quite a visual treat to watch owing to all the impressive texture, sets, costumes and language. But alas, this just couldn’t be easily said by Hawaizaada. The movie looks more like a 80’s Europe than India. No poor and deprived public, some extremely expensive costumes and vehicles and the people openly drinking and watching girls dance in bars. Doesn’t sound like a freedomless India to me.
Well, this isn’t all. Apart from the poor sets and the canvas in the which the movie is set, neither the characters, nor the story makes us connect with it. The comic angel is forcefully added and does not even makes sense. Even the jokes aren’t funny.
In order to take the film to a likeable level, even Ayushmann overacts in many scenes. Speaking of the actress, neither Pallavi Sharda, nor her character in the movie is good. The actress looks average and her role is an unnecessary addition to the script.
Technical aspects:
Half an hour in the movie, and three songs already gone, 45 mins and four and two and half hour or so in the whole movie and zillions gone. Could have made a romantic musical than an historic biopic. However, none of the songs are worth a listen.
Director Vibhu Puri has been a Sanjay Leela Bansali assistant and no wonder he was up for experimenting with his canvas. However, one thing he forgot is that he is no SLB. The sets look fake and and so do the people in the background. The screenplay goes haywire and fails to concentrate on the real agenda behind making the movie.
A good part of the first half goes by and you dont’ even see a parachute, forget a plane. The first half is slow and the second is slower. Cinematorgraphy fails to leave its mark due to the fakeness of sets and characters. Editing is fine.
Verdict:
On the whole, now that a plane has been invented and can take you places, go for a holiday this weekend, rather than watching Hawaizaada. Stay away from it.
