Nandi Awards which is the highest award ceremony for excellence in Telugu Cinema, Theater & Television was set up by the Government of Andhra Pradesh in the year 1964.
'Nandi' usually means 'Bull' and this prestigious award is named after the granite bull in Lepakshi (Anantapur) which is a cultural & historical symbol of Telugus. These awards were presented in 4 Catergories (Gold, Silver, Bronze & Copper).
Post bifurcation, Telangana Government wishes to rechristen the name of Nandi Awards and also make some drastic changes. Cinematography Minister Talasani Srinivas Yadav on Monday announced 3 names were under consideration and one among them will be finalised soon. He also promised Telangana Government will extend all possible support to Telugu Film Industry based in Hyderabad.
