After some of his previous ventures about social issues, Akshay is back with Gabbar Is Back. The movie marking the Bollywood directorial debut of South filmmaker Krish also stars Shruti Haasan. The film hits the theaters today, let’s see what it has in store for us…

Story

Gabbar (Akshay Kumar) is a one-man army, who is resolute to wipe out corruption entirely from society, but with a different approach. Gabbar does not only believe in wiping out corruption, but also the people involved in it. Whenever he stumbles upon a person encouraging the issue, he comes out to teach him a lesson in his own way.

But a local builder (Suman Talwar) is against Gabbar’s attempt to clean the society and won’t let his ‘Swacch Abhiyan’ be a success.

How will Gabbar still fight the evil of the society all alone and what encouraged him to selflessly clean the world? Watch the movie to find out…

Performance

Akshay plays the role of the self claimed law enforcer who means business and is by far the best actor who could have essayed this character on screen. On watching the film, you shall realize that no other Bollywood actor would have been right for this role and that it was specially scripted and drafted for our Khiladi Kumar.

His understated demeanor delivers massy lines that have the power to sway people with such ease and conviction that you feel like sitting up and paying attention to this man who is standing on a car, giving an arousing speech on youth power, all without raising his voice.

Shruti Haasan is seen playing the role of a lawyer who is busy drinking coffee and romancing Akshay than fighting cases, while Kareena Kapoor looks breathtaking in the movie and nothing more.

Plus Points

Gabbar Is Back is Gabbar’s i.e. Akshay Kumar’s show entirely. Akshay has been single-handedly fighting the evil of the society on screen with his last few flicks including Special 26, Holiday or Baby and this one is no exception, but with a different approach. The actor portrays a modern day Amjad Khan with his beard, but handsomer this time. Even though this Gabbar is far too dramatic and filmy, Akshay carries the role quite well.

Apart from him, there is Sunil Grover, popularly known Gutthi on Kapil Sharma’s show, who plays a low-rank police constable with grace. Jaideep Ahlawat is ok in a role of a CBI officer. Shruti Haasan does not have much scope in the film to showcase her prowess, but she is good in bits.

Minus Points

Akshay has overshadowed pretty much every other character in the film with his presence in every single scene. Krish’s attempt to remake the 2002 Tamil film made by AR Murugadoss appears to be dated somehow. Even though he has tried his hard to give it a more Bollywood approach, Gabbar Is Back is cliched to the core with some over-the-top drama and loudness. Chitrangada Singh and Kareena Kapoor Khan are seen in some item numbers, which have been very poorly edited. Also the director does not focus much on the romantic angle between Akshay and Shruti and it comes and goes in seconds.

Coming to the music of the film, none of the songs are worth a mention, except for the romantic track between Akshay and Kareena, which is somewhat ok.

Technical

The best part about the film is that it is fast paced and does not give audience the time to be cored. Also the first half manages to keep the viewers on the edge of their seats with some gripping fight sequences and dialogues. However, this is not enough to make a movie work. There are many glitches in the screenplay and is plot appears loose. A few scenes including the hospital and the accident sequences are an amazing watch. The concept sure manages to penetrate into the viewers mind, with corruption being one of the most worried about subjects of the society, but it sure has been tried a lot of times in Bollywood before. The dialogues are hilarious in a few places and bring out whistles, but in a few places, these cliched dialogues just do not make any sense. The editing of the film is disappointing.

On a whole, Gabbar Is Back is good only in bits and pieces, however if you are types that loves masala movies, this one can be given a shot.
