Story
Raja Lingeshwaran(Rajinikanth) is a rightful heir to a famous dynasty that once ruled most parts of Southern India. Though he belongs to the royal family, Raja Lingeshwaran grows up to become a noble and learned person. When Britishers take over after abolishing the traditional Indian ruling system, drought wrecks havoc in Raja Lingeshwaran's village.
Raja Lingeshwaran takes up the initiative and requests the Britishers to build a much needed dam that would serve well for the people. But his idea is opposed citing a political reason and hence he leads from the front and inspires each and every villager to take up the responsibility to build a dam for themselves without seeking help from the foreigners.
In spite of facing many deadly hurdles from people with evil intentions, the dam is built successfully however, the hard work of an entire village doesn't bear fruit as the constructed dam is not allowed to serve its purpose by some corrupt people. That leaves the present day Rajinikanth with a huge responsibility of finishing the work which was started by Raja Lingeshwaran and his people. But that doesn't proves to be easy as he is jolted by many obstacles. How he completes his task at hand with the help of his friends forms the remaining story.
Performance
Rajinikanth: He makes a comeback with a tailor-made subject. As Raja Lingeswar who is patriotic and the one who utters dialogue having philosophical touch with a lot of conviction, Thalaivar is outstanding. His screen presence, energy levels, style, attitude and dialogue delivery are simply superb. Its a treat to watch him back in action after many years and that's the biggest asset of 'Lingaa'.
Sonakshi Sinha: She appears in the Period set-up. As Village Belle who is fearless, This B-Town Babe looks great and performs very well. Her chemistry with Rajini is the one of the best elements in the movie.
Anushka Shetty : She plays Rajini's love interest in Present Times. Anushka has done a decent job in her role as TV reporter and the other leading lady
Jagapathi Babu is ok as villain but his role is not highlighted. Even Santhanam's comedy is missing though he entertained. Brahmanandam is wasted. Others like Vishwanath, Vijayakumar, Dev Gill performed accordingly.

The director has come up with a formula storyline and while the presentation was rich, the narrative was good in parts. The dialogues were well written. The script was average and the screenplay was energetic. The background score was upto the mark and three songs were worth watching. Cinematography was the main strength to this film. Graphics department did a very good job. Editing was crisp. Costumes were well designed to suit the backdrop and royalty while the art department was majestic.
Analysis
Though the film came into certain issues and controversies, the story didn’t really have anything to do with the allegations. When a superstar like Rajnikanth is in the lead, anything and everything goes beyond the aspect of analysis and is considered taken. In this film, the first half goes about with elements of some comedy, romance and some action.
The interval bang was alright and the second half was powerful with some good sequences. Overall, the film works due to the Rajini factor and the pace leaving no dull moment. At the box office, the openings will be heavy and if word of mouth goes well then it would become a blockbuster.
Final Word
Watch Lingaa for its sheer entertainment value and KS Ravikumar's intriguing narration. If you are a Rajinikanth's fan and do not mind Thalaivar disrespecting the power of gravity then watch it again solitarily for the Indian Film Personality of the year.
