AHMEDABAD: The focus of Patidar reservation stir has now shifted overseas. After raising a din clattering steel plates and spoons back home, Patidar women have begun the same movement overseas. Patidar women came out on the streets of New York, New Jersey and Edison, NJ, with steels plates and spoons and began clattering in protest.
Patidars have decided to protest during the US second visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The shadow of the Patidar reservation issue threatens to mar Modi's visit.
Patidars continued to remain belligerent, despite the Anandiben Patel-led Gujarat government holding talks with agitating Patidar leaders. The unrelenting Tejas Patel, convener of Overseas Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti (OPAAS), said that Patidars will protest against PM Modi during his US visit beginning September 23 in much bigger numbers.
On Sunday night, women and children came out on the streets raising anti-Modi and anti-Anandiben Patel slogans. The protestors demanded that the state and central government take action against the police officers responsible for the killing of eight Patidar youths. At least eight people died during the violence which broke out after the arrest of Hardik Patel at GMDC ground on August 25.
Satish Patel, a members of Overseas Friends of BJP said that around 70 OF-BJP members have tendered their resignations in protest against the police atrocities on Patidar youths.
"The number will not stop here, but increase as more people are lining up to resign from the forum," said Patel.
Office bearers of the OPAAS said that the community in the US is building pressure on Chandrakant Patel to resign as president of the Overseas Friends of BJP. "We expect to get his resignation before Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrives in the US. This will be a big blow for BJP as Patels had given him a 'rockstar' welcome on his first visit here as Prime Minister," he said.
