A Harris County Precinct 1 deputy constable injured earlier this year when a drunken driver struck his car has died, authorities said.

Jeffrey Wooten, 52, died early Wednesday morning at Memorial Hermann Hospital. He succumbed to an infection that, according to Constable Alan Rosen, likely was caused from the January wreck that left him a quadriplegic.

Wooten was coming home from a second job on Jan. 23 when he began to feel ill. He pulled over on the shoulder on Interstate 45 and was still in his car when a motorist struck him at 10:15 p.m.

The driver, 26-year-old Joseph Lee Fiedor, was charged with intoxicated assault. In August, he entered a plea agreement and was sentenced to prison for 20 years.

Since the wreck, Wooten has been living at the Spanish Meadows nursing home in Katy. Two weeks ago he was rushed to Memorial Hermann Hospital for emergency surgery, where he died after contracting a severe infection.

"(Wooten was a) beloved member of our office, a real wonderful guy," Rosen said. "When he walked into a room, the room would light up. He's going to be sorely missed by our office and me especially."

Wooten is survived by two brothers, both deputies with the Harris County Sheriff's Office.

Wooten's death comes a week after Harris County Sheriff's Office Deputy Jesse "Trey" Valdez III was killed in a crash that involved a driver authorities said was impaired.

Kelly Jo Ivey, 29, has been charged with possessing drugs after authorities said methanphetamines were found in her car.

She could face charges of intoxication manslaughter of a police officer.
