There are currently more than a hundred Texas prisons, housing thousands of inmates from across the state. Some are non-violent offenders from small towns, others committed heinous acts and will spend the rest of their lives behind bars.


The Texas Tribune compiled the facts on the more than 187,000 inmates that make up the Lone Star correctional system.
