The central government is planning to bring in a new law making it mandatory to have parking space for buying new vehicles - cars or motorcycles.
Union urban development minister M Venkaiah Naidu said that once this amendment gets passed in the Parliament and becomes a law, no vehicle would be registered without providing the requisite parking space availability certificate.
This proposal has been put forward by the ministry in order to discourage the public from owning unlimited number of private vehicles, which is resulting in heavy traffic jam on roads and alarming rise in pollution level.
The rule is likely to be applied first and foremost in the national capital, Delhi, which has more than 26 lakh cars as of March 2016, the highest in any Indian state.
Government officials welcomed this proposal but warned that the execution will be challenging. Once this bill is passed, its implementation would fall on civic authorities and transport departments of state governments.
The burden on the transport department officials will increase as they would be needed to inspect the certification of parking spaces before registering the vehicles.
