Right weapons should be in right hands, says PM Modi at high-level security meet

Guwahati: PM Narendra Modi addressed police chiefs and other senior intelligence officials in Guwahati on Sunday.

Prime Minister Modi's whirlwind tour of the North-East states began on Saturday. On Monday, his final day of the tour, he is scheduled to inaugurate the Hornbill Festival in Kohima before leaving for Agartala to launch a power project in south Tripura.

This is Prime Minister Modi's first visit to Assam since winning the Lok Sabha elections. On Saturday Union home minister Rajnath Singh said that the growing threat of Islamic State (ISIS) in the Indian subcontinent was the biggest challenge, especially in the wake of some youth being lured by them.

The Union home minister pointed out, “Though ISIS was born in Syria and Iraq, it is a fact that the Indian subcontinent is not outside its radar, especially as some Indian youth are also getting attracted to it.”

He said, “Moreover, the Al Qaeda had recently announced the formation of a new outfit, Qaeda-ul-Jihadi, with the intention of specifically targeting Gujarat, Assam, Bihar, Jammu & Kashmir and Bangladesh.”

He said, “India cannot remain unaffected by international terrorism, (and the) activities of the Islamic State. We can’t take Al Qaeda’s threat of turning India into an Islamic country lightly, we should consider it a challenge.”

Referring to the attack in Arnia sector, he said that Pakistan’s claims of “non-state” actors being behind such incidents, are not true.

Here are the highlights of PM Modi's speech:

More than the weapons the potential lies with the one who carries it
My gratitude to all those police officers who are serving the nation
After Independence many police officers sacrificed their lives for the nation, and this sacrifice should be known
In future I would want such conferences take place in other states too
For nation's defence, a good intelligence system is required
Can't we come out with an e-book in the states on the martyrs of the police force? The effort can inspire a lot of people
Our Home Minister has been a successful CM of a big state and his guidance will be beneficial for us
Police welfare is another issue. An officer may be very good but it's important that his/her family is well
    Police should be SMART. S-Sensitive & Strict, M-Modern & Mobile, A-Alert & Accountable, R-Responsive & Reliable, T-Techno savvy & Trained
