Hyderabad: The supply of drinking water in Hyderabad is set to improve a considerable extent in the coming days with an additional 117 mgd (million gallons per day) of water to be added shortly to meet the demands of the growing city population.Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao stated this during a meeting with elected representatives of the twin cities on Tuesday.
KCR convened the meeting to take feedback from city politicians about the recently concluded Swachh Hyderabad programme. Of the 117 mgd of water, Godavari river would contribute 72 mgd while Krishna’s share is 45 mgd. At present 385 mgd of drinking water is being supplied while the daily demand was 602 mgd, he stated.
Of the 20 lakh households in the state capital, drinking water was reaching only 14 lakh of them. However, the 117 mgd of additional water would ease out the existing tight situation, he said.Meanwhile, CM proposed setting up of three committees, comprising city elected representatives to study drinking water, storm water drains and sanitation conditions.
While one committee would look into GHMC affairs, the other two would study measures being taken by HMDA and HMWSSB in this regard. He tasked MPs K Keshav Rao, Asaduddin Owaisi, Malla Reddy and BJP president Kishan Reddy with the responsibility of constituting the committees, which would be submitting their findings within a week.
It is the time for action not words
Meanwhile, Chandrashekar Rao appealed to city elected representatives to work with co-ordination, cutting across the party lines to improve the image of the city. He stated that sanitation, drinking water, electricity wiring was not up to the desired mark. Rao suggested officials and city MPs, MLAs and MLCs to go on a joint tour of Nagpur and Delhi to study sanitation and drinking water methods, which could be implemented here.
Further, he lamented that drinking water pipelines were getting merged with sewerage lines at many places in the city. Stormwater drains, which were built during Nizam period to clear rain water have now transformed into drainage lines, due to failure of previous administrations, he said.
KCR informed the city leaders his plans to overhaul the garbage transportation method by pressing into service trolly autos replacing the outdated rickshaws. Union Labour Minister Bandaru Dattatreya, MPs Asaduddin Owaisi, Malla Reddy, State Ministers and city MLAs and MLCs, besides, top officials of GHMC, HMDA and Water Boards among others attended the meeting.
