Mehbooba Mufti claims support of 55 MLAs in Jammu and Kashmir

31st December, 2014 2:44pm     National      Comments

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti Wednesday called on Governor N.N. Vohra, claimed the support of 55 legislators in the 87-member state assembly and lauded former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

Mehbooba Mufti met the governor at the Raj Bhavan in winter capital Jammu Wednesday morning.

"She (Mehbooba Mufti) was in the meeting with the governor for nearly an hour and half," Raj Bhavan sources told IANS in Jammu.

Speaking to the media after coming out of the Raj Bhavan, Mehbooba Mufti said: "We have support of 55 MLAs in the state. But it is our intention and effort that a stable government is formed here to address the huge problems faced by the people in the state."

"We want that the agenda of development and peace should be carried forward. We want (former prime minister) Atal Bihari Vajpayee's peace process be carried to its logical conclusion," she added.

She, however, did not clearly specify a PDP-BJP alliance in the state.

Vohra had sent separate letters to the PDP and the BJP for discussions on government formation because voters delivered a hung assembly, with no single party getting a simple majority of 44 in the 87-member state legislative assembly.

BJP general secretary Ram Madhav called on Vohra Tuesday along with state party president, Jugul Kishore.

The PDP has 28 and the BJP 25 seats in the state assembly. The National Conference won 15 seats and its former ally, the Congress 12. Seven seats went to independents and smaller parties.

The state law department Tuesday issued a notification constituting the 12th state assembly which supersedes the 11th assembly whose term ends Jan 20, 2015.
