Hyderabad:Nearly 18,000 students in the city attempted the UPSC preliminary exam conducted on Sunday. Turnout stood at around 47.55 per cent which is almost the same as every year. However, students said the exam this year was tougher than last year. Also, students expected that deletion of the English section will give them more time, a lengthy paper meant otherwise.
About 38,650 students had registered for the exam in the city, but less than half appeared for it. While about 18,377 students attempted Paper 1 of the exam, nearly 18,161 students completed Paper 2 of the CSAT. Students felt that the exam was tougher than last year’s with an increased number of passages in Paper 2 and multiple options questions being asked in Paper 1.
The Supreme Court had refused to postpone the Civil Services exam saying the objections raised by students about English language comprehension in the question paper had been addressed. The UPSC had asked students not to attempt the section as it would not be evaluated. Students had expected that this would be an advantage since there would be additional time.
V. Gopalkrishna, director, Brain Tree, said, “Paper 2 was lengthier than usual, so the deletion of the English comprehension section didn’t give additional time.” “Paper 1 had questions with multiple options as answers. It was tougher than previous papers. They are trying to cut the number of students who can qualify,” he said. Overall students also felt the question paper was tougher than previous years.
