Balu (Indrajith) is a restaurant owner. His father Unnikrishnan Nambootiri (Nedumudi Venu) is famous for preparing delicious food and is known to all as Guruvayoor Thirumeny.

Mohanlal plays actor Mohanlal who is one of the close friends of R J Menon (Devan), a leading businessman based in Gulf. Menon's daughter Janaki's marriage is fixed with Manu, son of Panicker. Panicker is Menon's close friend and business partner.

Menon decides to have a grand traditional Kerala sadya for the marriage. Menon, along with Mohanlal, invites the famous Unnikrishnan Nambootiri to prepare the sadya. Accepting the offer, Thirumeny, his son Balu, and helper Gopi (Nandu) go to Gulf.

Balu is an M Tech holder. He reaches in Gulf with the hope of getting some good job. During the days of marriage arrangements, some unexpected events happened and the rest is plotted in 'Rasam'.

Aruna Shetty and Mythily do the female leads. 'Rasam' is directed by Rajeev Nath under the banner of Group Ten Entertainment.
