Fire truck hits, kills pedestrian in Gaston County

A fire truck hit and killed a pedestrian Thursday in Gaston County, officials said.

The accident happened in Ranlo at Lowell Road and East Street.

Highway Patrol officials said a man, who they said may have been drinking, stepped out in the middle of the four-lane road in front of the fire truck.

Authorities said the man, whose name has not been released, was walking home from a bar.

Bradley Hyman lives next door to the man who was struck and killed by a Ranlo Fire Department truck.

He rushed out of his home when he heard a loud boom.

“I run up here and they were doing chest compressions and CPR,” he said. “It happened right here but the truck took him about 50 yards.”

The pedestrian was not in a crosswalk and the fire truck was driving slower than the speed limit, Highway Patrol said.

There are no charges pending, authorities said.
