MUMBAI: Thirteen people were killed and four others were injured after consumption of what is likely to be spurious liquor at Malwani.

Police officials said the victims consumed the liquor at Rathodi village in Malwani on Wednesday. They took ill on Thursday and had to be hospitalized.

"The victims were rushed to the Surana Hospital in Malad and to the Shatabdi Hospital in Kandivali west," said an official. "We are still to find out exactly what substance was consumed by the victims," he said. The toll could rise.

Senior police officials rushed to the spot after learning of the incident. The crime branch has been asked to conduct a formal probe.
