Delhi church attacks: Police crackdown on protesting priests
Cracking down on the protest against attacks on churches in the national capital, the Delhi police on Thursday detained some agitators and said that the legal process will follow.
"We have detained some protesters, the legal process will be followed," said Mukesh Meena, Joint Commissioner of Police. The protesters, however, condemned the police action in strongest terms.
"The Police is being forceful, they should be ashamed," said Father Dominic, who was led into a bus by the police with some other supporters. A huge protest was held today outside the Sacred Heart cathedral in protest against the series of attacks on churches in the capital since December last year.
Shouting slogans for justice, agitators demanded immediate action against those responsible for the attacks. St. Alphonsa's Church in Vasant Kunj was the fifth church attacked in the capital on Monday.
Following the attack, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) issued notices to the Secretary, Union Home Ministry, Chief Secretary, Government of NCT of Delhi and the Commissioner of Police, Delhi calling for detailed reports including the status of investigation into allegations of desecration of the sanctity of the St. Alphonsa's Church.
