Katju’s remarks are based on ignorance of Muslim Personal Law
While talking on the issues of women in New Delhi on 30th September, Justice Markanday Katju, former Chief Justice of India, presently working as Chairman of Press Council of India made certain remarks criticizing the status of Muslims women and the system of pronouncing divorce thrice on a single occasion etc.
It reflects his ignorance of Islamic jurisprudence. His knowledge is based on the writings of the British who have translated from the original sources. If he reads original sources, he would plead for the implementation of Islamic Shariya instead of Uniform Civil Code. Shariyath Council of Hyderabad is sending a comprehensive book in English which depicts the rights of the spouses. It is hoped that it will enlighten Justice Katju.
