Thiruvanthapuram: In a unique protest in Kerala, a group of 250 girls held a sit in seeking gender equality. The girls from the College of Engineering in Thiruvanthapuram broke their 6.30 pm hostel curfew and protested in front of their college.
The girls are seeking that that their hostel curfew be relaxed till 10 pm as it is for male students. They have also created a Facebook page, organised street plays and held several rounds of discussions and debates but college authorities are yet to respond to their demands.
"We have been trying to break our curfew for over 2 weeks. Authorities haven't responded. It's gender discrimination because the boys are allowed to do anything," a girl sitting for the protest said.
"It has been 2 weeks since we started this movement. This is the first time we have came out as a group and have done something slightly similar to a protest," another protestor said.
The protest also comes at a time when woman MLAs have complained of physical harassment by male members in the assembly.
