Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao and IPS officer P Vijayan have been awarded Popular Choice Award at the CNN-IBN Indian of the Year 2014 for their distinguished work in their respective fields.
The credit for the oldest statehood movement of India this year that led to the creation of Telangana goes to K Chandrasekhar Rao. A former TDP leader, who a decade ago broke ranks and resuscitated the Telangana movement, Rao is now the first Chief Minister of India's 29th state.
IPS officer P. Vijayan is the force behind the Student Police Cadet Project that started in Kerala and is now set to go national. The project trains high school students to respect the law and develop empathy for vulnerable sections of society. Vijayan's own journey from a child labourer to an IPS officer is not just an inspiration to many, it has also motivated him to initiate several novel schemes to promote education among poor children.
