WARANGAL: In an attempt to check irregularities in student attendance, Kakatiya University authorities are planning to introduce the biometric attendance system at its affiliated degree colleges.

They are also mulling over steps to be initiated to improve the standard of the Under Graduate (UG) courses. The officials were forced to have deliberations following the poor percentage in the recently announced UG results.

While a total of 43,042 final students appeared for the exam, only 14,623 have cleared the exam registering a 33.97 pass percentage in 2015. The students of the first and second year degree also performed badly. They have recorded 28.33 per cent and 32.84 per cent respectively. A total of 350 degree colleges are working in Warangal, Khammam and Adilabad district under the Kakatiya University jurisdiction.

Expressing his dismay over poor results, the incharge Vice-Chancellor T Chiranjeevlu has convened a meeting with the officials including the Dean of the College Development Council (CDC) and asked them to come up with suggestions to improve the quality of education.

Sources said that the senior faculty members, who attended the meeting, observed that the students in many colleges were not regular as the college managements were not ‘strict’.

‘Many college managements have enrolled the students with a view to get ‘benefits’ out of the fee-reimbursement scheme available for the students. Many colleges have also given admissions to those who are not interested to attend the classes by offering ‘some money’,” said an official on condition of anonymity.

He said that there were no proper facilities like laborotory and library. The colleges are not recruiting quality teachers. On other hand, the authorities have also come to a conclusion that the movement for the separate Telangana also caused the drop in the pass percentage.
