Story:
A Group of Four People (Daas - Rajasekhar, Ramesh - Satyam Rajesh, Suresh - Achu, Pandu) form an Abduction Gang to rely on kidnappings for livelihood. One fine day, They receive a kidnap deal from one of their Victim's Father to abduct Finance Minister Dharmaraju's (Naresh) son Sathya Harishchandra. Rest of the tale is about to what extent the murky deal has taken them and how they got out of the issue!
Performances:
Rajasekhar tried to reinvent himself this time for a change and appears to have enjoyed the process of playing mentally unstable kidnapper. Sheena Shahabadi fits into the glamour slot perfectly and she is a feast for the eyes.
Sathyam Rajesh, Achu and the guy who played Pandu were just about okay. Naga Babu is impressive. Naresh and Raghubabu have done justice to their roles. Saptagiri isn't up to the standards set by him. Yog Jappe as Cop 'Gabbar Singh' is effective.
Plus Points:
Interval
Sheena's Glamour
Cinematography
Minus Points
Direction
Second Half
Analysis:
'Gaddam Gang' is the remake of 2013 Tamil superhit 'Soodhu Kavvum'. What worked for the original is mentally unstable characters and their unusual characterizations. Despite staying true to the original, Director Santhosh Jayakumar failed to keep the audience glued to the screens due to lack of emotional connect and high entertainment quotient.
Songs and Background Score by Achu are decent. Cinematography by Demel X Edwards is laudable. Dialogues are poorly written. Editing is poor. Production Values are pretty good.
Usually, Remakes work only when the essence of original is captured. 'Gaddam Gang' is no where close to 'Soodhu Kavvum' to set the cash registers ringing. While First Half is passable though with a decent interval bang, Second Half is lethargic and the long drawn Climax is a spoiler.
Box Office: Rajasekhar obtained the remake rights of 'Soodhu Kavvum' for an whooping Rs 1 crore as he is in desperate need of a success. 'Gaddam Gang' will surely fetch better openings than all the films of this Angry Young Man in the past 5 Years. Will that be enough to hit the bull's eye?
Verdict: Neither Entertains nor Thrills!
