The MAUD Minister sets target of planning 25 lakh saplings in a single day
Earlier, Akhilesh-led government planted 10 lakh saplings in a day in Uttar Pradesh
Meteorological Department (IMD)’s predictions of above normal rate of rainfall in the State give boost to the Minister’s plans of plantation.
The saplings will be planted at graveyards, government and private institutions, water bodies, open spaces and places along Musi River
GHMC offi cials claim that pollution levels in the city would fall down by 20 per cent if the saplings are protected for one year
Hyderabad: Telangana Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister K Taraka Rama Rao set a new goal to surpass the world record created by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav by planting most number of saplings in a single day.
While Akhilesh-led government planted 10 lakh saplings in a day in Uttar Pradesh, the Telangana Minister is planning to plant 25 lakh saplings on a single day this monsoon in Greater Hyderabad limits. Akhilesh Yadav’s government, in November last year had planted as many as 10 lakh saplings as part of `Green UP-Clean UP’ campaign at 10 different locations in the State on a single day.
Due to poor rains in the last two years, tree plantation and activities of developing parks in the GHMC limits were on slow pace. Even the Telangana Haritha Haram, an ambitious programme of Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao, failed to achieve the targets as the monsoon failed.
The government aimed at planting one crore saplings in a single year in GHMC limits, but it could not achieve even five per cent of the target. In order to overcome this situation and to create bio-aesthetic environment in the city, the State government is planning to organise a massive plantation drive this year by planting 81 lakh saplings with an estimated cost of Rs 50 crore.
Taking cue of India Meteorological Department (IMD)’s forecast, which predicted above normal rate of rainfall in the State, the GHMC officials are planning to plant huge number of plants before the monsoon begins.
A GHMC bio-diversity official said, “The Municipal Administration and Urban Development Ministry is planning to plant as many as 25 lakh saplings in the city. He said that the civic body is also planning to increase the size of the plantation from five to eight feet for more sustainability.”
The saplings were proposed to be planted at graveyards, government and private institutions, water bodies, open spaces and places along Musi River. Green curtains, green ways, avenues and distribution of plants were also part of the programme.
It is planning to plant leaf shedding saplings with a view to control the pollution in the city. The officials claimed that pollution levels in the city would come down by 20 per cent if the saplings are protected properly for one year.
