KTR writes to Sushma on deportation of Indian students by US

Telangana government on Wednesday urged the central government to intervene in the mass scale deportation of Indian students, majority of who are from Hyderabad, by US authoriities and ensure that the students with valid visa were not deported.

In past fortnight about 200 students from India had been deported back by the US authorities. Some girl students even complained that they had been ill treated by the US immigration authorities. Almost all these students were seeking admission in the Northwestern polytechnic and Sillicon Valley Universities.

Against this backdrop, Telangana IT and Panchayat Raj minister K T Ramarao urged Sushma Swaraj, minister for external affairs, to take necessary steps immediately to prevent the deportation of students who were seeking admissions in US universities following due process.

Writing a letter to Sushma Swaraj, Ramarao said the recent spate of deportation of Indian students by the US government was causing students and their families enormous distress. ” In the last two months, several students from Telangana state have faced deportation despite having valid visas issued y the US consulate. Traditionally, the city of Hyderabad has had a maximum share in sending students and skilled workforce to US,” he said.

Many of these students, Ramarao said, take loans to fund their education program in the united states and their deportation back to India would lead to deep emotional and financial anguish for their families.

“There seems to be lack of clarity on why US authorities are using highhanded methods to deport these students. Also, there have been media reports where the students were mistreated by the US authorities,” he said in the letter.

He requested the foreign minister to initiate a dialogue with the concerned US government heads to ensure that students with valid visas were not deported back to India.
