Hundreds of residents of a lower income neighbourhood in Bengaluru (formerly known as Bangalore) resorted to stone pelting on Wednesday after it was alleged that a minor was raped by her teacher inside a local school.

While the teacher has been arrested, the condition of the girl or whether she was actually raped is not yet clear as she is undergoing a medical test.

Police caned the rioters and fired teargas shells to quell the frenzy.

The issue started taking a communal turn because the alleged perpetrator and the victim are from different religions.

Senior police officers reserved public comment but confirmed on the condition of anonymity that the teacher has been arrested.
