Closing the doors on the hopes of crores of the people of Andhra Pradesh, the BJP has denied the much anticipated special status to the status. BJP's decision comes as a rude shock since BJP itself demanded for the special status during the Congress' reign at the time of state division and senior BJP leader Venkaiah Naidu fought valiantly for the special status.

Bowing to the directives given by the 14th Finance Commission, the centre stated that no other state including AP and Telangana will be granted special status until 2020. In a reply to the written query filed by AP parliamentarians K Prabhakar Reddy and Maganti Babu, Union Minister of Planning, Rao Indrejit Singh, categorically said that the centre will only extend the waivers sanctioned to AP for 5 more years, permanently shattering the hopes for special status.

BJP's U-Turn over the special status has immediately attracted severe public fury and even the opposition parties have been fuming over the BJP leaders and are demanding for their resignations. It is well known that the BJP ridiculed the then Congress government on their promise of granting special status to AP for 5 years and said that they will grant the special status for 10 years, if elected into power.

With this latest betrayal, there is no doubt that the BJP leaders and the party's alliance in state, TDP, will be under intense pressure from the opposition and the common public.
