Bengaluru: Images of a man beating and kicking his daughter on a street in Bengaluru have caused outrage on social media. Two young women who intervened to save the 25-year-old, posted the images on Facebook.
In her Facebook post, Nivedita said the man, a policeman from Madurai, beat his daughter "black and blue", while at least 50 people on the street simply watched. He was taken to a police station but no complaint was filed as family reportedly said it was not necessary.
The man was allegedly angry about his daughter's relationship.
Nivedita referenced the controversy over the ban on "India's Daughter", the documentary on the 2012 Delhi gang-rape, and questioned the state of women in the country.
She said after she and her friend came upon the violent scene, "me and Archana rushed out of the car, pushed the man back in an attempt to loosen his grip on the girl. He was grabbing the girl by her hair, slapping her, kicking her in the groin as she fell down on the road. Archana started pushing the man while I tried untangling the girl's hair from his fingers. Once freed, we along with the girl sought refuge inside our car. The man sat down on the car bonnet, refusing to let us drive."
Nivedita said the woman, Surya, works in Bangalore and her father Rajaram is a sub inspector. Her mother, a teacher, allegedly supported her beating and accused her of shaming the family.
"The parents had heard rumors of their daughter having an affair and was hence "teaching her a lesson" refusing to listen to her or believe her denying the affair. The father wanted to take her back to Madurai , against the wishes of the adult daughter and forcibly marry her to someone of their choice," said the Facebook post.
"If a policeman chooses to physically and publicly abuse his adult daughter, how are we safe in the hands of such "protectors of law"?? If a teacher mistrusts and blames her adult daughter while supporting her husband's abusive behavior, how can we entrust our children's grooming to such "educators and shapers of young India" ??
