Militants Had Claimed Responsibility For Manipur Attack,Army launches massive hunt operation in Manipur,Violation of SOP to blame for Manipur ambush
NEW DELHI: The Indian Army on Tuesday said it had carried out joint operations with Myanmar against the militants responsible for the June 4 deadly attack on a convoy of 6 Dogra Regiment in Manipur.
The attack in Manipur's Chandel's district had killed 18 Indian soldiers and injured 15 others. Two militants were also reportedly killed in retaliatory fire.
The Army said the operations were carried out along the India-Myanmar international border.
The strike was carried out by the Army's special forces on specific intelligence input in coordination with Burmese authorities, with the Army saying that "significant casualties" had been inflicted on two militant groups believed to be NSCN (K) and KYKL.
PTI quoting sources reported about 15 insurgents were killed in the assault with no casualties among the soldiers.
Indian Army's additional director general of military operations, Major General Ranbir Singh, in a media briefing on Tuesday, said the Army got intelligence reports that more attacks were going to be carried out in Indian territory.
He said, "Based on these intelligence reports we conducted operations ... we conducted operations in the morning and significant casualties (of militants) have been reported. Today morning, two separate groups were engaged near the India-Myanmar border and along the Nagaland-Manipur border ... Any threat to our safety and security will meet a firm response."
While he said the operation was carried out "along the India-Myanmar border at two locations, along the Nagaland and Manipur borders", PTI quoting sources reported the strike was carried out inside Myanmar with the coordination of local authorities.
This is the first time that the Indian Army carried out a cross-border commando operation during peacetime, which marks a pro-active approach against terror, the PTI sources said, adding the strike was drafted in the wake of a series of attacks by insurgents in various states of the northeast.
"Significant casualties have been inflicted on the militants. As a consequence, threats to our civilian population and security forces were averted," Maj Gen Singh said.
"We are in communication with the Myanmar authorities on this matter. There is a history to close cooperation between our two militaries. We look forward to working with them to combat such terrorism," Maj Gen Singh said.
NSCN(K), which reneged from a ceasefire in March, has been involved in a series of attacks in tandem with some other militant groups under the banner of the so-called "United Liberation Front of South East Asia".
