EC to issue notification on May 14
Hyderabad: The Election Commission of India on Thursday announced the schedule to fill six seats of the Telangana Legislative Council and four of the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Council. The seats fell vacant in Telangana following the expiry of term of MLCs KR Amos, Nagapuri Rajalingam, Peer Shabbir Ahmed, Balasani Laxminarayana, Bodakunti Venkateswarlu, K Yadav Reddy and Dharmapuri Srinivas on March 29.
Since the number of MLCs to be elected by the MLAs has been fixed as 14 as per the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, the Union Home Ministry has advised the ECI to fill only six MLC seats. Therefore, the ECI has announced the schedule to fill these seats. Similarly, the ECI announced the schedule to fill three additional seats of Members of Andhra Pradesh Legislative Council by MLAs.
Another seat, which fell vacant due to the death of MLC Paladugu Venkata Rao on January 19, will also be filled. The notification for these MLC polls will be issued on May 14 and the last date for filing nominations will be May 21. While the nominations will be scrutinised on May 22, the last date for withdrawals will be May 25. Polling will be held on June 1 and counting of votes will commence on the same day at 5pm.
