Senior IVRCL officer arrested in Kolkata flyover collapse case

Kolkata Police made yet another arrest on Wednesday in the Vivekananda flyover collapse case, taking the total number of arrests to nine.

The police arrested Ranjit Bhattacharya, Associate Vice President of IVRCL – the Hyderabad-based Construction Company that was building the flyover, which collapsed on Thursday.

Bhattacharya had been undergoing treatment at a hospital after the flyover collapsed. On Tuesday, the doctors had declared him ‘fit to be questioned’. There after, on Wednesday morning, he was arrested at the hospital.

Bhattacharya will be produced before the court in the city on Wednesday.

On Monday, the police arrested Gopal Krishna Murti, Director Operations; S K Ratnam, Deputy General Manager Projects; senior engineers Shyamal Manna and Bidyut Manna.

The state agency investigating the case had earlier arrested Tanmoy Sil of AGM Projects, IVRCL, from Burdwan when he was trying to flee. Three other officials -- Mallika Arjun, senior AGM, Pradip Kumar Saha, Manager Structural VRF and Debojyoti Majumdar, Assistant Manager Administration -- were also arrested.

While investigating the case, the police came across several offices of IVRCL, which have now been sealed. Three offices belonging to the construction company located at Kasba, Anandapur and Beadon Street were sealed. A guest house at Salt Lake registered under the name of the company was also sealed.

A portion of the Vivekananda flyover near Ganesh Talkies in Girish Park collapsed on Thursday afternoon leaving as many as 26 dead and over 150 people injured.

At 1232 hours, the company's shares were trading up 0.56% at Rs 5.36 from previous day's close.
