Kerala police on Tuesday detained two people in the Dalit law student's rape and murder case in Ernakulam region of the state.
Police till this morning were severely criticised for moving too slowly on cracking the case, even five days after the incident came to light. They are now questioning the two men arrested.
The victim was found in a pool of blood on April 28, with her intestines pulled out, as well as at least 30 stab wounds and a head injury. The victim reportedly lived with her mother in a small house and their financial situation is said to have been weak.
"It was a brutal murder. There were stab injuries on her body. We suspect she was subjected to smothering and strangulation," Ernakulam Range IG Mahipal Yadav said.
Police had earlier said the postmortem report would give more clarity on whether the woman was subjected to sexual assault before or after the murder.
