With India on a high following their recent performance led by young Turks Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, the explosive batsman Yusuf Pathan is betting big on MS Dhoni and his men to recreate history and become world beaters in the slam-bang format of the game.
Yusuf Pathan, part of the Indian Team which won the inaugural edition of the ICC World Twenty20 in 2007, believes India have the right mix of young and exciting youngsters and playing at home makes them the firm favourites.
"In T20I India are consistently doing well. And if you take look at India's recent tour to Australia, the series against Sri Lanka and the Asia Cup, we have done exceptionally well," the burly all-rounder said in an interview with Cricketnext.
"No doubt India are favourites to win the World Cup. In home conditions India always have an upper hand and they are consistently performing well in this kind of situations. So this time also they will live up to the expectations," he said.
Pathan singled out batting mainstay Virat Kohli and dashing opener Rohit Sharma as India's star performers in the tournament.
"Virat Kohli is a very dangerous player especially in T20s. It's a treat to watch Kohli playing. Both are equally dangerous in their own way and have the ability to single-handedly win a match for their team," Pathan, who plays for Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League, added.
On the team composition, Pathan said there was a right mixture of experienced players and young talent but refused to say who would have the upper hand.
"It’s difficult to say who will perform well and who will not. Basically, it is all about giving your best shot during critical situations and win the game for the team. When a team is playing, nobody cares whether it is the youngsters or the senior players who are doing well. It is all about how tough you are at the given situation."
However, the 33-year-old feels other teams can also give a stiff competition to the hosts and singled out the West Indies team which boast the likes of destructive batsman Chris Gayle.
Disappointed at not being part of the Indian team but hopeful of a comeback, Pathan recalled India's 2011 World Cup as the most cherished moment of his cricketing career.
“There are many moments to cherish in my life but nothing can match Team India winning the 2011 ICC World Cup. It was something very special that happened to us and I still don’t have words to describe the feelings,” he signed off.
