Mumbai: E-commerce giant Amazon, one of the largest retailers e-books globally, launched its first brick-and-mortar bookstore in Seattle on Tuesday at 9.30am.
Located in the University Village in Amazon’s Seattle hometown, the 5,500 square feet store will offer approximately 5,000 books— a comparatively less number as compared to traditional bookstores around the globe.
All the books in the store will be displayed cover-out rather than spine-out, in an effort to showcase the authors better and help the people spot their favourite titles effortlessly.
The store will consist of only certain books, which are popular amongst its large customer base. Additionally, Kindle and Fire tablets will also be on display in the store, however, they will not offer customers to pick up books from Amazon’s online store.
In the past Amazon has been subjected to a lot of flak, as the rise in popularity of e-books became a nightmare for myriad physical bookstores. In such a scenario, the company’s decision to launch a physical store might have come as a surprise to many.
However, it is really doubtful if the ‘new’ bookstore would draw any profit for the company, considering the number of e-books available on their website. Amazon’s decision to open a physical bookstore seems more like an attention-grabbing project.
