When Mani Ratnam, one of the most respected Indian filmmakers, speaks a home truth, everyone is bound to take note of it. This time, he hit out at the politicisation of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), which has been in news for wrong reasons.
During an interactive session at Bengaluru International Film Festival (BIFF), he said, "The party in power often misuses the CBFC as a tool to push its political agenda, which results in extra-Constitutional authorities dictating terms." In recent months, film personalities like Kamal Haasan, Javed Akthar, Mahesh Bhatt and others have lashed out at the political agenda of political appointees.
He expressed satisfaction over the appointment of a panel headed by Shyam Benegal to make recommendations for revamping the Board.
He also added that he owes his knack for slice-of-life drama to the works of Guru Dutt and K Balanchander.
