Four extra days of imprisonment have been added to actor Sanjay Dutt's prison term as he had spent extra days outside jail after his furlough period had ended, Maharashtra home minister Ram Shinde said.

"A departmental inquiry would ordered against erring prison officials and action would be taken against them for the delay in deciding the extension of furlough," Shinde told reporters. 32 prisoners were granted leave from December 20, 2014 to January 1, 2015.

The minister said that there is need for clarity in the jail manual, adding that changes would be done accordingly during the next legislature session. It normally takes 45 days to take decisions about furloughs but in Dutt's case, it took 113 days.

He said that Dutt's furlough ended on January 8. The actor was sent back because a decision on extension of his furlough was pending. "His furlough was rejected after two days but Dutt remained out of prison until then," Shinde said.

Four days were added to his jail term to compensate for the extra time he spent out of jail. He has been sentenced to 60-month jail for possession of illegal weapons like AK-56 rifle and 9mm pistol.
