Snapdeal,selling vibrators,massagers
A Delhi-based lawyer has filed a case against Snapdeal and one more e-commerce site -- Ohmysecret.com -- for selling vibrators. However, before you jump to a conclusion let us tell you that this case is slightly more complicated than usual. It has not been filed because the lawyer believes vibrators and sex toys are against Indian culture. The case has been filed because the lawyer -- Suhaas Joshi -- wants to test the limits of Article 377 that criminalises homosexuality in India and wants to encourage discussion over it.
According to a report by Quartz , that vibrators that can be used for anal sex violate Indian laws and hence websites like Snapdeal should not be selling them. "I am not against homosexuality," Joshi told Quartz. "There is a lot of confusion. Companies are selling products which are used for same sex activity, but at the same time, Indian government says such acts are illegal."
A quick search in Snapdeal reveals that website indeed sells vibrators and massagers. It puts such products under "Health, Wellness & Medicine" category. In most instances, it also tries to downplay the sex-angle of these products. Instead it calls them body massagers.
Joshi's complaint was heard by a metropolitan judge in Tis Hazari Courts on February 2. The judge in her order has asked police in Subzi Mandi to investigate Joshi's complaint and act on it if required.
The court also cops to prepare a report in the matter and file it on March 21.
