ONGC fire claims one, eight others still undergoing treatment at Mumbai

SURAT: Shivaram Kalgude, 51, a crane operator from Sitaram Logistics who was among the eight workers who had sustained burn injuries in a blast at the well number 31 of the ONGC at Dihen village in Olpaad taluka during the repair and maintenance job on April 18, succumbed at the Mumbai hospital on Wednesday morning.

The victims had sustained burn injuries when a blast took place at well-31 at Dihen village in Olpaad during the routine maintenance and repair job on April 18.

The victims were first rushed to the city based Care and Sunshine Global hospital in critical conditions and that they were immediately shifted to the Masina hospital in Mumbai.

Shivaram Kalgude breathed his last at 6:20 am on Wednesday morning at the Masina Hospital, while others personnel injured in the blast are under treatment at the same hospital.

In a official communique, ONGC stated that victim Kalgude was the son of former ONGCian and that his body was brought to Ankleshwar for the last rites at the request of the family. The company has assured the family all help as he is survived by his parents, wife, a son and a daughter.

The ONGC CMD has announced a sum of Rs 5 lakh for immediate release as onetime payment to the bereaved family as a humanitarian gesture. It has also been decided to help the son of the deceased for gainful employment in a running contract.

The other victims under treatment at Masina hospital have been provided with Rs 1 lakh each for taking care of the day-to-day expenses. These patients are in the ICU.
