A day after suspected militants attacked a BSNL franchise outlet in Sopore in north Kashmir, killing one person and wounding two others, unidentified gunmen killed a 54-year-old man in his house in Dooru village in Sopore.
The police said that the man had a mobile tower in his compound and that he had been warned by the gunmen to shut down a week ago.
“Ghulam Hassan Dar was shot inside his living room at around 9.30 pm while he was watching a cricket match. His family was in the kitchen at the time of his killing,” Superintendent of Police Abdul Qayoom told The Hindu.
Mr. Qayoom said that Mr. Dar had been warned by unknown gunmen a week ago to shut down the mobile tower in his compound and he had, in fact, shut it down.
“Dar was himself a former militant, who was released in 1998 after serving time in the prison, and his son, Tanvir Ahmad, is a Sarpanch of the village,” Mr. Qayoom said.
