Police officials from the Cyberabad police department visited the University of Hyderabad campus to investigate into the suicide of a research scholar last year.
Madari Venkatesh had committed suicide in November last allegedly as a result of depression for not being allotted research guide by the university. The investigation comes on the heels of a direction by Justice S.C. Sinha, a member of the National Human Rights Commission, to the Cyberabad police commissioner to submit an investigation report on the suicide.
During the visit of police officials, members of the Solidarity Committee for Madari Venkatesh staged a protest alleging that the university representative had presented wrong facts to the NHRC.
Police officials recorded depositions by university officials as well as from a student representative of the solidarity committee. The student representative alleged that Venkatesh was a victim of caste discrimination at the hands of some faculty members at the Advanced Centre of Research in High Energy Materials (ACRHEM) and also by the then Vice-Chancellor Ramakrishna Ramaswami.
