Haryana to make pregnancy registration compulsory
To curb the evil practice of sex determination, the Haryana government is planning to bring in a law making registration of pregnancy compulsory within the first three months. State health minister Anil Vij said on Thursday that legal opinion was being sought to take action if a family does not get pregnancy registered within the stipulated time.
He said that inspections would be conducted on all ultrasound centres in the state within next one month. The inspection would be conducted by a joint team of judicial magistrate, a police officer and a doctor which would check the records of all centres. Vij was presiding over a review meeting of the health department to effectively implement the PCPNDT Act in the state.
The health minister said that the declining sex ratio was a matter of shame for Haryana and the state government was committed to reverse it. "It has been decided to give a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh to anyone giving information about sex determination cases and female foeticide. Also, name of the informer would be kept secret," he added.
Vij said that intelligence wing of police department would also give its inputs about those indulged in this unlawful practice.
